There was a definite, end of season, vibe at Henley, with an initially tight, albeit drab game, deservedly won 0-3 by our Thurlow Nunn bound visitors. Despite there being nothing to play for, the game still drew a crowd of 106, including 3 groundhoppers, including one who had travelled all the way from Gloucester!

Halesworth certainly had the majority of the early chances with Chenery and Payne forcing Punter into early stops. At the other end Ablitt had an effort blocked and Hooley saw his free kick go just wide. On the half hour Punter tipped over brilliantly to deny Whiteman as Halesworth piled on the pressure. Halesworth took the lead after 43 minutes, Backhouse finding Payne, who turned smartly and fired home for 0-1 at HT.

Henley were caught out shortly after the restart, Halesworth extending their lead after 49 minutes, Parrot’s shot saved, Payne hitting the post with the rebound and Gill on hand to roll into the empty net for 0-2. Things got even worse for Henley on 64 minutes, Payne spotting Punter off his line and placing his strike well for 0-3. Henley did keep pushing, but couldn’t find a way through the well organised visiting defence, as Halesworth held out for the win.

The Henley MOTM went to Wharton-Richardson, who never gave up trying to create an opportunity.

Over the last few years, these games have always been a real battle, with lots of respect between the sides, we wish all of our friends at Halesworth good luck in their quest for Thurlow Nunn success.
