SIL Premier Division: Old Newton Utd FC 3-0 Henley Athletic FC

A crowd of 74 saw a ruthlessly efficient Newton end Henley’s winning streak with a 3-0 home victory. Henley looked rusty after having not having a game last weekend, frustratingly, despite having 4 evening fixtures coming in April, once again next Saturday we have another free weekend.

There was little to report in the first half, with neither team producing a noteworthy effort, both team’s defences cancelling out any attempts. That changed in the 44th minute, Spurling misjudging the flight of a deep cross leaving Warner free to finish at the back post to put Newton 1-0 up at the break.

Henley started the 2nd half brightly, Graham’s header, from a Smythe cross, hitting the post in the 47th minute. But only two minutes later it was Newton who increased their lead, a quick throw in and a knock down to the feet of Dunn, who drove home a low shot from the edge of the area for 2-0, a fine finish. Henley’s hopes of a comeback were put on hold, when they were reduced to ten men after 58 minutes, Graham sinbinned for a comment to the referee. Despite being understrength, Henley kept pushing for a way back into the game, but failed to create a significant chance.

The weather was started to have an effect now, the game halted briefly as the referee took the teams back to the dressing rooms as heavy hail and rain sent most on the sidelines running for cover, the unseasonal weather causing our camera to turn off, unbeknownst to us at the time.

When the game resumed it was Newton who extended their lead after 77 minutes, Warner’s initial strike hitting the bar, but he was alert enough to react quickest and finished the rebound for 3-0. Newton did have the ball in the net again two minutes later, following a corner, but it was correctly disallowed for a foul.

To their credit, Henley kept pushing for a way back into the game, right up to the final whistle, but it wasn’t to be.

Despite a poor performance from the Hens, all credit to Newton, who fully deserved their win, neat, efficient and error free football saw them worthy victors on the day.
