SIL Premier Division: Henley Athletic FC 1-0 Tattingstone Utd
A crowd of 103 saw a fiercely contested, tight game between two evenly matched, footballing sides, a late strike from substitute Fike giving Henley a 1-0 victory.
The 1st half saw little goalmouth action, with only two real incidents of note. Tattingstone coming close with a Fernandez effort dragged wide on 15 minutes. On 40 minutes only a terrific goal line save from Downing prevented Wadey opening the scoring for Henley as he fired goalwards from short range after a H. Francis corner. Leaving the score 0-0 at the break with both defences on top, despite both teams playing some fine passing football.
Henley had much more of the attacking play in the 2nd period, a shot from H. Francis going just over the bar after 53 minutes. H. Francis the creator again two minutes later, getting to the byline and crossing, but Wadey’s header went straight to keeper Downing. On 62 minutes Golding gets through on goal, but his shot is stopped again by Downing and goes to safety.
At the other end Bloom makes his 1st and only real save of the game, pushing away a long-range strike from Howell after 64 minutes. Henley were reduced to 10 men after 71 minutes, Paine sent to the sinbin, this produced a period of Tattingstone pressure, but they were unable to capitalise as Henley reorganised and held firm. With Paine back on the pitch, it was Tattingstone who were reduced to 10 men, a straight red card for a reckless challenge by ex-Hen Sylla-Keita after 83 minutes.
Henley upped the pressure, bringing on strikers Fike and Finley and were rewarded on 87 minutes. White heading a Downing goal kick forward, which was deftly flicked on by H. Francis into the path of Fike who ran into the box and smashed home an unstoppable strike to make it 1-0 and give Henley the 3 points in a game that had 0-0 written all over it.
Midfielder Crisp got the MOTM award, his hard work and persistence, replicated by all of those in red on the day. Another Henley performance full of graft, character and commitment against an excellent Tattingstone side, who gave us our toughest battle of the season to date.
We’ve a day off next Saturday, giving a welcome break and time for a few lads to come back from injury.
