SIL Premier Division: Henley Athletic FC 2-3 East Bergholt Utd FC

A crowd of 103 enjoyed a tight game, with little to choose between the sides, until a crazy last three minutes, which saw the visitors take the points.

The game started evenly, the first real action coming after 12 minutes, Graham hurling himself in to block Elseidy’s strike. At the other end, Webster saw his strike blocked on the line after 16 minutes.

Wharton-Richardson curled an effort just wide on 36 minutes, which was the last event of note in a half were both teams were probing, but struggled to find that final ball.

Spurling was called into action 5 minutes after the restart, before 5 minutes later Scrivener made the save of the game, diving full length to tip Wharton-Richardson’s strike onto the post. Scrivener again came to Bergholt’s rescue on 57 minutes, racing out to deny Dozzell on the edge of his area. Henley were awarded a penalty on 61 minutes, Dende clearly felled in the box, Webster making no mistake to slam home the spot kick for 1-0.

Wharton-Richardson came close to making it 2 after 67 minutes, flashing his shot narrowly wide. But it was Bergholt who would score next, a good passing move seeing Broom equalise on 79 minutes to make it 1-1. Nothing Bergholt didn’t deserve, with most watching, on both sides, adjudging a draw the fair result.

However it was not to be, as on 89 minutes Henley came undone for the second consecutive game, failing to clear their lines and Cooper giving away a clear penalty, which was neatly tucked away by Godbold for 1-2.  A minute later, with Henley committed forward looking for the equaliser, they were caught cold, Elseidy taking the ball past Spurling to make it 1-3. But the madness continued, and in the 91st minute, came the goal of the game, precocious young Henley talent Taylor, for the second game running, jinking through the opposition defence and curling a fine shot in the top corner to make the score 2-3 at FT.

A good competitive match, with both sides playing the right way, clearly disappointing from a Henley viewpoint, but such narrow margins have always decided games.
